What is the Aptis exam?

Aptis ESOL is an innovative English certification exam developed by the British Council. It is a fast and inexpensive way to certify your level of English from level A1 to C2.

What is evaluated?

Aptis ESOL evaluates the following language skills: Reading and listening comprehension: Evaluate your ability to understand written texts and audios in English.
Oral and written expression: It measures your ability to communicate effectively in English both orally and in writing. Grammar and vocabulary: Examine your knowledge in grammatical structures and lexical richness.

How many variants are there?

Aptis ESOL General and Aptis ESOL for Teachers: They evaluate levels A1 to B2 in the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR). Candidates who show a level higher than B2 obtain a C in the CEFR. Aptis ESOL Advanced: Evaluates language proficiency from B1 to C2 in the CEFR.

How much does it cost?

The price of the Aptis exam varies depending on the variant: Aptis General and Aptis for Teachers: Approximately €87. Aptis Advanced: Around €99. The results are sent by email between 48 and 72 hours after taking the exam, and the certificate is sent by courier within 7 to 10 days after the publication of the results.

Reading

Duration: 30 / 35 minutes. Parts: Word selection: Choose a word from a list to fill in gaps in a text. Sort phrases: Organize phrases to form a coherent story. Union of opinions: four different people talk about the same topic and seven opinions must be associated with the four people. Assign titles: Quickly read paragraphs and choose a suitable title for each one.

Grammar and Vocabulary

Duration: 25 minutes. Description: Evaluates the knowledge of grammatical structures and the proper use of vocabulary.

Writing

Duration: 50 minutes. Parts: Short answers: Write answers of 1-5 words to each question. Complete form: Fill out a form with 20-30 word phrases. Discussion forum: Answer three questions in a forum with 30-40 words each. Email: Write an informal email of 50 words and a formal email of 120-150 words.

Listening

Duration: 40 minutes. Parts: Short conversations: Listen to 13 conversations and answer a multiple-choice question for each one. Short monologues: Listen to 4 monologues and choose the right option from 6 possible for each one. Long conversation: Listen to a conversation and select who the listed opinions belong to. Long monologues: Listen to two monologues and answer two multiple-choice questions for each.

Speaking

Duration: 12 minutes. Parts: Personal questions: Answer three short questions about you and your interests. Image description: Describe an image and answer two questions about it. Comparison of images: Compare two images and answer two questions about them. Presentation: An image is shown and you must answer three related questions.
